Cat people! My vet suggested stridex pads for cat acne, I tried it once and her fur fell off...What's with that?

Asked by albohn3 (30points) July 14th, 2010

We use ceramic bowls, which we clean regularly. We’ve tried multiple foods in case it was an allergy. She still has chin acne. It doesn’t seem to bother her at all, so I’m thinking rather than make her lose her fur we probably will just live with the unsightly spots.

cat acne? leave the poor thing alone if she’s uncomfy… it could be an allergy, take kitty to a vet that specialized in derm

Feline acne is usually a chronic and persistent issue. If the acne is primarily a cosmetic issue, you may want to leave well enough alone. But some cats develop large, painful cysts that require treatment. You may want to consider a referral to a veterinary dermatologist. Some pet owners find that Stridex pads help keep it under control, but if you are not satisfied with the results, I would desist. You can also try Retin-A under a doctors’ guidance.

Stridex is very, very harsh, and shouldn’t be used by anyone IMO. I also vote for just letting the little thing be.

Since it does not bother her and the vet is not concerned I would let it alone. However, some cats (and dogs) get chin acne because their chin is always moist.
In nature they would not have their food available all times of the day. Schedule her meals.

You can save hundreds of dollars down the line by at least washing the cat’s chin with soap and water every other day. Just make it real quick and non-traumatic. Do it before foodtime, and eventually the cat will associate putting up with it to receive food afterwards. The reason I say this, is that these acne spots inevitably lead to cysts which at first can be cured with medicine, but eventually become uncurable. And its a lot easier to prevent it with soap and water, or at least get the cyst removed once it appears, give it 2 years, then have it removed before it starts taking over difficult tissue near the tongue and cheeks.

I would not use stridex pads on a cat.. they are ment for people.. Try to give her a bath with a gentle baby shampoo, like johnson & johnson no more tears.. this is for newborns, & is a very gentle wash. I have used it on a new kitten with eye problems & a bad odor problem & it works great!!
