How do you think people develop affinity for certain foods...

… that you wouldn’t consider to be “familiar” to them? By way of example, I LOVE many different types of Asian cuisine, but grew up in an Italian family eating, well Italian food. The flavor profiles of Italian and say Korean are extremely different, yet I love both.

To what could you attribute that?

A willingness to be open to new things and experiment a little. I grew up on meat and potatoes, but now I like all kinds of different cuisines. Aisian, German, Italian, Vegetarian: Bring it on.

I have experience on both sides of this question. I have a co-worker that no matter which country he is in, he insists on American food. You know like hamburgers, mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly. If he can’t get it, that’s o.k. because he brings his own supplies.

When I am in Korea and they ask what I want to eat, I just tell them anything but pork and dog. Pork upsets my digestive system and dog is just wrong. Those are my limitations. I also stay away from sushi since my last bout of food poisoning.

I wonder that myself sometimes. I think there are different things that can contribute to this, for example is what foods you grow up with – eating a certain food all your childhood life could make you like a particular food. As for the rest, maybe it’s a genetic thing, haha. Mostly likely it’s just personal taste, like we each have our own favourite colour. Personally, i’ve never understood how anyone could like the taste of beer and whisky. Ick.

Hmm, now what kind of cuisine is Aisian?

@Adirondackwannabe Depends on the country, that ranges on dishes from India to Hong Kong. People forget that Indians are Asians also. Plus there is a wide range in India from vegetarian dishes to meat dishes influenced by their Muslim residents. I, by the way, like most of it except that I can’t get comfortable with eating with my fingers.

I think it has to do with the memories and experiences that you attach to them. For instance, I don’t like Mexican food because of a bad dinner I had. Not in the sense that it mad me sick, but in the sense I didn’t enjoy the dining experience. I like Taco Bell because it was what I grew up with and had a lot.
