The sign says open 24/7. is it really?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) July 17th, 2010

On at least 10 different occasions, my wife and i have attempted to purchase certain foods from Jack in the Box restaurants in the Nashville area. this occured mainly after 10 pm. our main request was for two milkshakes. we have been given every excuse in the book, as to why milkshakes are not available at Jack in the Box restaurants, after 10 pm. one worker just told us, “the ice cream machine just started acting “quirky”, so we shut it down”. i have heard similar answers on many occasions from Jack in the Box. if the sign says open 24/7, aren’t they suppose to have ALL the food they advertise on the menu? is this the same situation where you live?

We mostly have grocery stores that are 24/7 and therefore they have all their foods available. We also have a bagel store that’s open very late and very early – if you go there at 3 am or so, their new fresh bagels won’t be there yet.

It depends on the restaurant. Even with being open 24/7, they have to maintain safety guidelines. So it could be that they prefer to break down and clean the shake machine late at night. I’ve seen some restaurants have a special Late Night menu and only the items on that menu are availble between certain times.

I remember working at McDonalds and there were a lot of parts to a shake machine. It takes a while to clean. It’s easier to do when the place is about to close, and you need a lot of lead time. Safety guidelines, for sho.

Thanks all for the answers. i was just told that the entire staff at this particular Jack in the Box would be replaced, because of the complaining customers and their 24/7 menu and their excuses. next week, i will give it another try at this location and see what happens. i understand their need to clean the ice cream machine, but could this not be accomplished on each eight hout shift? this way, their ice cream would always be available to the customers. john

@john65pennington It takes a lot of time to clean those machines and then get them back up to temperature so that the restaurants can serve the ice cream again. It is suppose to be done once a day.

@john65pennington why keep torturing yourself? Are their shakes THAT good that you wouldn’t be better off going to a grocery store getting some milk and ice cream and doing up the old-fashioned way?

We generally stop at this one location, on a trip home from Kentucky. and yes, their milkshakes(when you are fortunate to have one) are worth it. its one of the few locations you can actually have real ice cream in a milkshake. Hardees is too watery and forget McDonalds. this location is conveniet for us on our way back home. ez off ez onto the interstate.

@john65pennington it should be illegal to make a milkshake with anything but real ice-cream imo. My friend owned a sub/icecream shop many years ago, and I spent a summer working for him. Man I miss those shakes with real bananas…

No, there’s no rules saying they have to have everything available all the time. Shake machines are a pain in the ass. They really do need to get cleaned out because they’re pretty easy to get clogged/dirty if people use them and don’t know what they’re doing.

When I worked at Steak N Shake we’d close down the inside so we could mop. Granted, that was around 2 or 3 AM.

There’s a Jack in the Box just a few blocks away from me here in SoCal, never once have I been told that they were out of something or unable to make something.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir When I lived in Brooklyn Dagastino’s closed at 10pm. Which grocery store(s) are open 24/7?

If I can walk into a place and use the bathroom any time I want, I say it is open 24/7. Who cares if they have food?
Some places only serve breakfast food during certain hours. Why? Because the grill must be sparkling clean for eggs or there will be dark spot or two on them and heaven forbid we should ever eat an egg with a fleck of burned pancake on it.
Unless it says full menu 24/7 you can’t complain.
Besides, you shouldn’t be eating that anyway. Aren’t you watching your cholesterol? ;-)

Jazmina88, i would be happy to bring one to you, as long as its before 10 pm. now Mikey, thats another question. he does go on some of our road trips and he demands his own ice cream. when Jack in the Box is down, out or whatever, Mikey has to be taken to a McDonalds for his one dollar cup of frozen whatever they call it. Mikey knows the difference, but he is not finicky, like me. Jack in the Box is home-based in San Diego. i think i will email them and see what happens. love the people in Kentucky.

worriedguy, only the driveups are open after 10 pm in my city. its a safety issue. if its after 10 pm and you gotta go, its either a gas station, conveniet store, or a quick stop behind a building for personal relief.

@john65pennington It is sad to hear that the level of safety, the 10pm thing, in Nashville, has devolved to the level of the feral beast. Those who wish to destroy our society are succeeding.

I’ve occasionally been told that the freeze or milk shake machine was being cleaned etc late at night, but not often. Here, it’s drive thru only after 9 pm most fast food places that are open late.
