Half-centimeter swelling 2cm from ear, after toothache?

Asked by rexpresso (922points) July 20th, 2010

I have gone to the dentist emergency today because of toothache. One tooth has been emptied apparently and filled with temporary plaster… and it will take some 3 more sessions just to get this tooth straight. I will need to desensitize the nerve or whatever it’s called.

The thing now is that I have pain from more teeth, and the pain even goes down to the jaw and up to the ear. And next to the ear I now have a 1cm or half cm swelling… a little round thing that pulsates, I feel blood passing there.

I don’t know if I always had this artifact near my ear… I don’t think so. What I know is that pain is concentrating there. As is in my throat ganglia…

May this be an infection? Abscess? Worth rushing to the ER to avoid losing my hearing?

Call the online help desk at the hospital and ask them.

Seems like the wise thing to do, yeah. In any case I’m doing antibiotics already… will call the hospital anyway. Thanks

The swelling sounds like a swollen lymph node. Behind and below the ear is where some are, and they swell when you have an immune response, so yeah, it may be a sign that you have an infection, but likely not at that location.
