How can I make my XP computer default to the C drive when booting?

Asked by Rarebear (25192points) July 23rd, 2010

I have a couple of external hard drives. If I inadvertantly leave one of them on, the computer will default to the hard drive and try to boot from that. How can I default it so it always boots from C drive?

You should be able to go in to the BIOS and change the boot order so that it will boot from the internal HD first and not the CD or removable drives. You could also diasable booting from CD or removable discs all together.

@Lightlyseared And I go into the BIOS by hitting one of the function keys while booting?

Yes. It depends on the manufacturer but there is usually a liitle sign that apears before the windows loading screen that says press the DEL (or whatever) key for setup.

There is an excellent application called Partition Magic 8.0 that can accomplish that.
