How do you cook corn on the grill?

Asked by janbb (62858points) July 26th, 2010 from iPhone

Trying it for the first time. How do you do it? Shucked? Wrapped in foil? Huh?

Peel back the husk, remove all the silk. Fold the husk back over the corn, place on the grill and cook until done turning occasionally. You can season and butter the corn before you recover the corn with the husk.

http://hubpages.com/hub/Grill-Corn-on-Cob-in-Husk gives you a good guide.

I usually husk the corn, put butter and a touch of salt on on, then lay a piece of green onion along side of it and wrap it in foil. But, I’m not the one who does the actual cooking so you’re on your own from here! (Sounds good tho. We have yet to cook the corn we stole from the farmer two weeks ago!)

If u don’t wrap it in foil it’ll taste like shoe leather but everyone will think it’s great Just Because it was….corn cooked on the grill.
What is yellowish brown, ugly, tasteless and tough but everyone loves it?
tick tock tick tock Right! Corn cooked on a grill !!

If you cook the corn as described below (with credit to @WestRiverrat above), I always clean the corn as described (get rid of the silks but keep the husk attached and out of the way while you de-silk). Then I pull the husks back up and soak it in lightly salted water for about an hour. Put them on the grill with husks intact (no foil and no kernels directly on the grill). The husks don’t burn and the corn doesn’t even need butter it is so wonderful.

I like that onion idea and may have to try it.

@Kayak8 Sometimes we’ll split a potato and put a piece of green onion in it before we bake it. That’s good too!!

It depends on the taste I am looking for. I usually soak it in its husk for 10+ minutes then on the grill for 15–18 minutes. There are other times that I wrap it in foil with some coarse salt and pepper and Franks and butter.

Either way, grilled corn is the way to fly.

Haven’t found much that cannot be grilled.

I take the unshucked corn and soak it in water for an hour or two (you’ll need to put something heavy on top of it to hold it underwater). The put them on the grill – the water keeps the husk from burning and almost steams the corn. And contrary to @Aster‘s contention, it’s delicious!

I peel back the husks and remove the silk. Then I like to soak the corn in cool tap water for about 20 minutes and then put it on the grill. If I’m doing burgers, the corn will go on first, and come off last, for a total of about 15 minutes. I grill it over a medium low to low heat.

I like to dress my corn with mayo, lemon juice, and cajun seasoning. Sounds weird, but it is incredibly sweet and delicious!

soak in water in the husks for a while. then place on cooler side of hot grill. have a vat of about 4 lbs of butter melted already. after corn on grill has smoked for about 30 minutes or less depending on heat of fire, pull back husks and bathe corn cob in melted butter.

FOOTNOTE: oops, i forgot that you can season grilled corn once it immediately comes out the butter with fresh cilantro, sea salt, and freshly ground pepper

I prefer pulling the husks back, cleaning the silk off and then pull the husks back into position. Soak in water for awhile, wrap in foil, and throw on the grill. The corn steams and roasts. You can also throw in butter before you pull the husks back, but that’s personal taste.

Pull back the husk and remove the hair-like filaments. Leave the husk on the corn to protect it while cooking. Cook the corn around the outer perimeter of a Webber with hot charcoal (with hickory and misquote smoke). Cook and smoke until it is done and then eat it as is. Adding salt or butter isn’t needed or healthy.

Footnote number two. Vidalia onions also go good with corn on the grill. Slice fairly thickly, rub with olive or other oil, and throw directly on the grill. The small pieces may fall through the grill so you may want to use them elsewhere. Grill until brown or even black, serve with the corn, awesome.

WELL??!! What’d you do and how did it turn out??

janbb's avatar

Soaked it a bit with husk peeled back, closed husk and grilled for about 15 minutes. We’re camping so couldn’t get too fancy. Salt and butter;came out great. Thanks all!

Dutchess_III's avatar

(Was 15 minutes enough time?)

justn's avatar

@janbb Glad your corn turned out! Grilling it really is the best way to cook it.

janbb's avatar

Might have been 20 but yeah – it was enough.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

It’s Summer, the corn is fresh, the grill is hot, How can anyone not get it right? YUM

Aster's avatar

No one has mentioned the temperature of this grill.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Aster The same temperature that you would use for chicken or steak. Not smoking hot. Maybe charcoal after 45 minutes.
