How can I jog with headphones in my ears?

Asked by Afos22 (3990points) July 28th, 2010

Ok, here’s the thing. I see people jogging all the time and most of the time they are wearing ear-bud style headphones so that they can listen to music while they go. Whenever I try to jog with headphones in my ears, they are just a hassle. They keep falling out of my ears. They stay perfectly fine in my ears as long as I am not running/jogging. So, my question is: Does this happen to you too? and, Can I do anything about it?

I can not understand why anyone would want to jog with head phones on. TheI idea to me seems to me to have fun exercizing and how can you do that with wires attached to your ears. Also as a safety feature I would want ot be aware of my environment. Cars and bikes and people.
Do not wear them , no big deal.

@MaryW Gavin deBecker, a personal security expert who wrote The Gift of Fear says that jogging (or walking for that matter) with headphones is a huge risk to personal security. Lurve for a great answer.

There’s a style of headphones that worked well for me—Sony made them but I’ve seen other brands—that have a plastic band that sits on the back of your neck, thus keeping the buds solidly near your ears without being inside them. You can still hear street noise (which is important) but also the music… and the buds stay put. I don’t jog anymore, but when i did, I HAD to have music or news playing while I did it to “race the time.”

The earbuds you’re using don’t fit your ears right for jogging.

These are the ones I use:

They’re buds, but they have a rubber loop that makes them fit snuggly on your ears. They work perfectly for me, when I’m jogging and even when I’m warming up to play Racquetball.

I won’t wear them. I want to be totally aware of my surroundings when running. There are high-quality earbuds that mold to your ear. I’ve worn them with communication sets.

I’d just try and get a better pair of earbuds if you’re set on it. The iPod ones have never worked in my ears either, but these stay in like glue.

I would be wary of wearing headphones where you run, but it really depends on the situation. I never run with them in residential and urban areas, but I see no problem with running with headphones on the beach.

Even if the earphones are not noise-canceling and you can still hear traffic, your concentration will still not be optimal; and even if you jog safely in the right places, it doesn’t mean everyone around you will run, cycle or drive past you safely. If you want to make it more enjoyable jog with a friend which will also keep your motivation up.

@ninahenry jogging with a friend won’t keep your motivation up if you can’t keep up with him. When I’m working out, I don’t want anyone I know to see me….

Try some inner-ear earbuds, they don’t fall out easily and are (personally) more comfortable than regular earbuds.

@MrItty if you jog with the right person it will keep your motivation up, it’s easy enough to filter out people who are too fast/too slow/not serious about it. anyway, it’s jogging, not running and you’re supposed to be paced.

You can still be safe whilst enjoying jogging.

@ninahenry Thank you, but I’m not really concerned about my safety. I am in a safe area, jogging on back streets and the music isn’t turned up too loud. I was only wondering if anyone had the same problem, or if i could do something about it.

The headphones go in your EARS!? That’s why my ass hurts everytime I go jogging.

I hate when I jog and the wires go all over the place. I usually just put the mp3 in my pocket or shoulder and then put the cord under my shirt and put the earphones on. Dunno works for me :)

They have earphones that fit around your ear. They clip on, kinda… I use them. They never fall off. They have good sound to.

Buy headphones that are designated as “sports” models or something similar. Usually they have a way of hooking around your ear. I had that problem for a while at one point before I gave up.

Although personally I recommend you pull the plug and listen to the rhythm of your body and the world around you : ) But that’s just me.

@BarefootChris My body’s rhythm isn’t very catchy.
