Ideas for good healthy lunches to pack for school?

Asked by Amish_Ninja (225points) July 29th, 2010

I’ve decided to try and pack a good lunch for myself every day this year in high school. I’m someone who isn’t a very picky eater, but I don’t like a ton of meats in my lunches. This makes packing a deli meat sandwich every day impossible, which is full of sodium anyway.

I have a few things I’m looking for in a lunch:
*balanced meal
*something that will keep me feeling full
*loaded with veggies and fruit
*Something that has a total cost of $2.00 or less per meal, I will buy in bulk for somethings such as yogurt if I can.

Other than those guides, I’m open to your suggestions. If you have a recipe for something, please link to it so I can see if it’s something I’d like to try.

Onigiri, or Japanese rice balls. My Mom made rice balls for me when I was a kid——cheap and easy to make, yet filling and nutritious. Make some sushi rice, cool the rice, then form into big balls and fill them with anything you like, tuna, scrambled eggs, cold meats, cucumber or other vegetables, etc. I liked them plain, with just a bit of salt for flavoring, and maybe some seaweed. Here’s a link to a recipe for onigiri (rice balls)—-

Aplle slices with peanut butter or cheese is pretty good. With a bottle of water, or 100% juice and vogurt, thats how my friends do it.. They seems to be full, and maybe throw in a granola bar, or carrots with some ranch.

Package your own cut fruits and vegetables. Don’t buy the little baggies, the price is unfair.

I love packing the mott’s single serving applesauce and a bit of string cheese. I figure there is a fruit serving and dairy serving, and you can always pack a sandwich. Maybe with a PB&J? When I make these at home, the entire meal isn’t even 400 calories.
(The string cheese comes in individual “strings” I guess you call it.)

Spread the inside of some pita bread with hummus then shove in some veggies of some sort, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, avocado, whatever you want, a little mayo. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like I can stuff just about anything into pita bread and it ends up tasting good around lunchtime. Pack some fruit, an orange, apple peach, etc. Make some rice pudding or oatmeal cookies to put in a little container if you want something sweet. And if you must, maybe some chips or Goldfish crackers in a little ziploc bag?

I pack my hubby lunch everyday. I put some hard boiled eggs sometimes instead of a sandwich. fruit, carrot sticks or celery. I also buy licorice. which is sweet and fat free.

When dinner is being made and the ovens on get a rack to put in;

Roast veggies

Yam fries

zucchini

onions seasoned and olive oiled!

I get ground organic Chicken and make little patties for dinner and then take for lunch too, stuff with cheese! Call them “Chicken Clumps”!

extra brown rice

home made oat cookies low sugar are fine for an On the Go lunch!

Your imagination limits you but use Whole Grains and veggies seasoned simply!
