Is it bad to lose.. 6 pounds in 6 days?

Asked by Shuichi (316points) July 30th, 2010

I’m on a diet and I’ve been eating healthy and exercising a lot but apparently losing so much weight is unhealthy. But I don’t know what to do differently. I’m not starving myself at all or doing crazy workouts. Also, my eating habits before were horrible and I’ve never exercised! Like.. late night fast food, eating a big meal a day.. stuff like that, so maybe my body isn’t used to the change.. help?

I’m not doctor, but, I hear people say that its really unhealthy to lose X amount of lbs within X amount of days, but in reality, it really depends where you’re starting, and how much of that weight is water etc etc.

For example a really big 350 lb person could lose 6lbs, but in proportion to their overall weight, it’s nothing. But if you only weighed 100 lbs, and lost 6 lbs in 6 days, that would be considered unhealthy.

I’m willing to bet that you’re gonna lose a lot of weight in the first couple weeks, but as you lose more and more weight, that will rate of weight loss will significantly slow down as you become fitter and fitter. As long as you are being healthy and are eating enough you should be fine. You were saying that you had never worked out before right? I’m willing to bet, its a lot of that “Easy” to lose fat thats going away.

congrautulations and keep up with it.

Some of what you have lost is water. Drink a lot of fluids. You won’t be losing six pounds every six days.

It’s not uncommon to lose a fairly large amount in the first week or two of a diet. After that, it should slow down to more like 1 to 2 pounds per week.

It probably water weight like @perspicacious said

I agree with @perspicacious on the water weight. Drink lots of water. Stay healthy and you can’t go wrong.

I gaun or lose 6 pounds in a day, just in the normal course of things. But I eat like a horse, and work out every day…. until recently, I started a diet.

You will lose what seems like a lot in the first couple weeks. Just don’t get depressed when it slows to 1 to 2 pounds a week.

A pound is 3,500 calories. Unless youre doing some kind of extreme sport, it has to be water weight.

I agree with @augustlan
I dont diet anymore, but when I did when I was younger the first 3 weeks of the weight would drop off (only about 4 or 5lbs for me). Then it would drop down to about 1lb. But a couple of weeks of only losing 1lb was so disheartening and would often lead me to knocking the diet on the head altogether.
If you know you are eating ok, keep going and monitor the situation. If you’ve never exercised before then your body is certainly adjusting to a big change.
Good on you for trying to turn things around!
