How soon after stopping anti-depressants can one drink wine?

Asked by sliceswiththings (11723points) July 30th, 2010

My grandma decided today to stop taking anti-depressants she had only been on for like a week. She took them before bed. Can she drink wine tonight since she won’t be taking any more?

This is a question for your grandmother’s doctor, not Fluther.

They’re all different. You should ask the doctor.

Unless her doctor said she could stop the anti-depressants, I would encourage her to keep taking them.

Often people start feeling good and think they are cured and don’t need the drugs anymore. In reality the only reason they feel so good is because the drugs are managing the symptoms.

If the Dr said she could quit them, then she should have been told if/when she could start drinking alcohol.

You should not quit anti depressants cold turkey. The doctor needs to wean you off them. I have never had a problem with anti depressants and alcohol

The doctor told her to stop them, don’t worry.

I’ve taken anti-depressants for years. I also drink occasionally, and have never had a problem. I’d think it would depend on what specific drug she was taking, and what the half-life of it is. You might try calling a pharmacy if you can’t get an answer from the doc tonight.

As a general rule no one should stop any doctor prescribed medications without first checking with the doctor. However I really doubt if one glass of wine would hurt.
