What do we Americans really think about Muslim people?

Asked by NormanL (481points) August 4th, 2010

Do we fear or hate them as a group because of 9/11 and other acts of violence by a few people of the Muslim faith? If we do, how can we get past this?

You should avoid painting the feelings of an entire country toward a group of people with a broad brush. The truth is, Americans feel many things towards Muslims. Some hate them, some love them, some are Muslims themselves, some are apathetic, some don’t even know there is a religion called Islam.

Personally, I judge based on the individual. I like the Muslims I go to school with. I hate the Muslims who cut off girls’ noses and the ones that rule certain countries with an iron fist. Do these characteristics come from the certain individual’s religion, per se, or other factors? A little bit of both. I can’t really say.

I agree, creole bastard.

Oh god, there is right and wrong and people are people and this is not so hard you idiots.

TexasDude's avatar

@Zyx, is that a personal attack on one of us?

Zyx's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard No no, sorry for the confusion. Just frustrating, ignorance in general.

That is to say my previous response was meant to convey the following message: “You shouldn’t assume not every muslim is an American or the other way around”.

You shouldn’t even assume that if you know it to be true.

know it to be true… Stupid star wars.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I did not intend to paint anyone with any brush. I asked a question. The question came to me because of the violent opposition to the Mosque near ground zero.

@NormanL, I know, I wasn’t directly accusing you of anything. Just pointing out that it is very hard to put “Americans” into one easily digestible group.

@Zyx, gotcha. Carry on.

”..Americans..” are hugely diverse in their choices of belief systems/traditions and include ”..Muslim people..”. Perhaps your question would have been better phrased if you had asked what American Non-Muslims ”..really think about Muslims..”.

Me, I’m not allowed to comment. I’m not American.

know muslims, know violence, no muslims, no violence.

A more pertinent question….what do the majority of the human race think of Americans?
after all, Americans are the new kids on the block, are they not?

NormanL's avatar

@lloydbird I see your point. I crafted the question on the fly as it came to me.

NormanL's avatar

@mammal No, we are the world. No one except the Native American Indians is from here. Everyone else came from the rest of the world. Therefore we are the world.

There are no Muslim people; just people who believe in Islam. If one is irrationally violent, that’s just another neurosis.

The moderates don’t work hard enough to discredit and control the radicals.
I can’t tell if it is because they are afraid, or secretly agree with the principles but either way, non-actions speak louder than words.

daytonamisticrip's avatar

To me their just people. It’s not like if you see a muslim that person personally took down the twin towers

I think “most Americans” don’t really care anything about Muslims day to day, and don’t think of them at all.

As far as Muslim dignity and Jihad, perhaps the movie Traitor (2008) handles it as good as any. (Happens to be on Netflix instant play if you have it.)

I’m an American and I don’t hate people who follow Islam at all. It’s not the religion itself, but a small subset of people who think that murder and destruction is the only way to get want they want. People like that come in all faiths, creeds, colours and nations, so it’s kind of silly to hold up one religion as the vortex of evil.

“We Americans” is not an entity that has any feelings. There are well over 300 million people in the U. S. and at least 3 million Muslims in the U. S.

I can assure you that there is no wide spread hatred or other issue to get past, as you say. The majority of we Americans are busy with their own day to day issues and give no thought to any such thing.

This question is about on par with “What do we as Americans think of white people?”

It should make you go “What?”

zophu's avatar

@lapilofu Yeah, I just put what I thought about muslims. And I guess I’m an american. I mean, geographically at least. It is a flawed question.

AstroChuck's avatar

I’ve never been a big fan of muslin. I prefer cotton myself. I tend to hang more with those people.

filmfann's avatar

I have always tried to be open-minded and fair, and not racist, but I have always had bad vibes about Muslims. I struggle with it.

thomascruz's avatar

Well hell, I figure if someone wants to believe in something, who the hell am I to judge them? But, in simpler words, I don’t hate Muslims, hate is a ridiculous thing.
