Can you suggest a birthday gift for a 25 year old girl who is very fashionable and health conscious?

Asked by jca (36062points) August 5th, 2010

My sister is turning 25. She likes nice clothes, and she has a good job so she can afford them. She lives in NYC and she shops in very nice stores, like on Madison Avenue. Her style is somewhat preppy. She also is very health conscious, tries not to eat meat, eats mostly salad and grains, although she does like tea and coffee. She plays tennis and is learning golf.

In the past, i have given her Starbucks gift cards, soaps from Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, the Martha Stewart Baking Book and a whole grains cook book. I have also given her money as a gift. I would not try to buy her clothing as she is too fashionable for me to even guess what she would like.

I can spend $100 and max $150. Cash is a last resort, as I would like to give her a present.

Any ideas?

Does she yet have a nice refillable notepad? I’ve got one (a gift) that’s leather 7×10 and it fits in most of my handbags nicely. Mine came from Coach, I don’t know how much they run but it’s become one of my favorite items because it holds pad, pen, has a few inside flaps to insert business cards or a few loose sheets. I can place anything in it and know it won’t be bent, torn or dirtied. Love that thing because it makes me appear a lot more organized than I am.

Gift certificate to at least supplement the price of a day at a luxurious spa?

Take her out to the movies and a nice dinner. I bet she would love that. She gets to have fun and spend time with her favorite brother.

What about something like a tennis bracelet? Or something like personalized golf balls/bags/towels (or other golf accessories)?

What about buying her a golf lesson? My uncle was always interested in flying, but never did anything about it until my aunt bought him a flying lesson for their anniversary. Then he got himself a plane.

Babycakes brownies were voted best brownies in NYC and they are truly fantastic! Almost all Babycakes desserts are gluten free and vegan. They have a cookbook if she likes to bake here is their website http://www.babycakesnyc.com/ or you might be able to send her some brownies. The Keurig coffee maker is a good idea, someone mentioned above, could be a nice combination desserts and coffee.

A nice bottle of wine and/or Beecher’s Cheese seasonal club membership.
Membership to the Met or to Frick.
Two tickets to the ballet, concert, opera, Cirque du Soleil show Wintuk (@$75/ea).
Membership to a botanical garden.
Prixe Fix dinner for two at a top-rated restaurant.

By the way, there’s nothing healthy about golf.

@lilikoi Why do you say there is nothing healthy about golf? If you walk the course it is healthy.

lilikoi's avatar

@JLeslie I don’t know many people that take the time to walk the course. But besides that, it isn’t very physically demanding. More importantly though, it is land and water consumptive and pesticide intensive – golf courses are not healthy for the environment. People are connected to the environment; by destroying it, we destroy ourselves. Someone that supports Whole Foods and Trader Joes in one instance and plays golf in the next is either a hypocrite or ignorant.

JLeslie's avatar

@lilikoi Wow. Well, since this chick lives in NY, she probably just goes to the driving range at Chelsea Piers LOL. People are hypocrites all of the time, but every little bit counts. I don’t do everything I would like to do for the environment, but something is better than nothing. The few times I played golf we walked. I think being outside for a couple of hours is a great way to get exercise, walking counts in my book. The pesticides and chemicals to control weeds I guess are bothersome, but the water consumption only troubles me if there is a drought where the golf course is. I guess maybe the irrigation system uses energy, so that is a consideration.

A $30 food processor and a $15 book on raw food recipes.
I’m not saying she should be a raw foodist… I just think people like her get excited over trying stuff like that, and they enjoy it, and it’s healthy.

If she’s taking tennis or golf lessons, and likes where she’s taking classes, a gift certificate for a session of instruction is always a good gift.

Or, you could give her an Amazon gift certificate. There might be something she really wants that you don’t know about.

@Frenchfry: haha, i’m a girl, so i’m her sister not her brother.

@lilikoi: i think she took up golf because people in the family play it, and for her, a stockbroker, she helped her company plan and host some golf trips, so it’s a way for her to network. i don’t think hypocrite applies in her case.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. She already belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, i may go with the Coach idea.

i’m giving you all Good Answers.

@jca I apologise . Girl. Your a girl . Got it.

If you wind up giving money just give a check instead of a gift card I say. Gift cards can be harder to keep track of if you don’t use them right away, and why not let her spend it where she wants. Just my opinion. The only acception I would make is a Starbucks giftcard, which is my husbands favorite gift to receive, especially when it is a token type of gift like $10 spent. Because he hates paying the high prices of Starbucks, but loves the coffee, and he can use it right away.

@JLeslie: i agree – i have gift cards and it seems like such effort to spend them, keep track of them, etc. Some i’ve had for years.
