What "specific use" items do you use for other things? See details?

Asked by JilltheTooth (19787points) August 7th, 2010

For example: I once used dental floss to repair a sail, I’ve used toothpaste instead of spackle for small holes in the wall and I used part of an old venetian blind slat to protect molding when I was painting and didn’t have tape. How innovative and ingenious are the Jellies here?

I keep handcuffs in my tool box. It is very versatile. I have used it to hold exhaust pipe in place. I have used them as a hammer. I’ve used the latch side as a saw. the latch end can be used as a pry bar. They also make great adjustable pliers.
You have to use real handcuffs – not the cheap Chinese knock-offs. .Mine are old Peerless cuffs. They might be the most useful tool in my tool box.

Lemon juice as deodorant. Works like a charm.

Toothpaste also makes a great jewelry cleaner since it’s a very mild abrasive.

Dental floss is also great for cutting cheesecake. Much better than getting a knife goody.

Also works great on soft goat cheese.

I have used, and will use, just about anything, for any purpose, if it gets the job done. There are so many handy little bits of hardware, etc. out there that are good for solving a great variety of vexing little logistical problems that plague one’s daily life, but off the top of my head? Cable ties. I use them for all sorts of things, though I don’t think I have ever actually used them to secure cables. e.g. one night, my toilet wouldn’t flush because the chain that connects the flush arm to the flapper valve had corroded and fallen apart. Fixed it in 2 minutes with a cable tie. Handy little things. I also have one in my dishwasher that keeps the top rack from being pulled out too far and coming off it’s track. There was a little plastic cap/stopper thing that used to be there, but it’s gone and the cable tie works just fine.

If it gets the job done, I’ll use it. Lol.

@Facade THANK YOU. There is a running joke in my circle of friends about that. It involves a TGIFriday’s, lemons, and me screaming: “IT’S A NATURAL DEODORIZER!!!!!!!”

I like used green tea bags as a sort of astringent.
Windex will get paint out of your clothes and carpet.
Baking Soda does everything else. If it bought me a ring, I’d say yes.

@SK

If the Baking Soda is used to bake your SO’s favorite treat it might help you get that engagement ring.

You know the old saying about how the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?

And when you do finally get that ring it can definitely keep it nice and clean and shiny just like the toothpaste can.

:D

I’ve often used my cat to shine my wooden floors! :-/ Lol.. Before anyone shouts ‘ANIMAL ABUSE’. She initiates it by attacking the mop, once she’s on there, there’s just no getting her off it……

* A wine jug to water plants
* A plastic bag tie to replace a broken flapper chain in the toilet tank
* Old t-shirts for dust rags (Mom used cloth diapers)
* Tape wrapped inside-out around my hand as a clothes lint remover (the FedEx self-adhesive mailing packets work really well, too)
* A glass-door book shelf in the dining room for china and linens

@Scooby. I had one cat of mine who served as a hot water bottle foot warmer.

She loved getting under the covers and curling up by my feet on cold winter nights :)

It was definitely her idea and preference and she would wake me up nudging and bumping me to lift up the cover so she could crawl under.

It’s certainly nothing I could ever “abuse” her into by forcing her under there, ha ha. They are ornery little critters with minds of their own.

As long as they get a stubborn idea into their heads, might as well go with the flow and figure out a way to benefit from it. You get clean floors and I got warm feet :)
