Do you agree with these sayings?

Asked by 9doomedtodie (3113points) August 9th, 2010

1.They say time changes the things ,you actually have to change them yourself.
2.They say failure is the first step of success.
3.They say every tunnel has a bright light at its end.

These sentences are only sayings but very hard to implement or everyone can’t go on as per these sayings.

I just say to the sayer of these sayings,

They say time changes the things ,you actually have to change them yourself. (But,they never say the things that going to happen are good or bad).
They say failure is the first step of success. (But,they never say anything about next steps or second & remaining steps till last will be of success).
They say every tunnel has a bright light at its end. (But they never say,how far such dark tunnel goes?).

Do you agree with me? I am not saying it’s completely true, but partly it’s been true.

What do you say?

100% agree with you. Especially the light at the end of the tunnel.

They are just sayings…universal truths if you will and it is up to the reader to interpret and apply them to their own lives as each of us will have differing good/bad experiences, or few or many next steps towards success and my tunnel may be much longer or shorter than yours. The main thing is that you contemplate your life and make as much out of it as you can during your short visit here.

Agree with the first two, but I cynically hold that one must be prepared for the apparent light at the end of the tunnel actually being the headlight of an oncoming locomotive.

I say they’re bullshit ;)

@john65pennington : They:
They are the people who say these things,
They are the people who created these sayings,
But,
They are not those people who actually experienced the sentences written in the bracket (....).

1) I don’t understand #1 as it’s written.
2) Sure
3) Why are New Yorkers always cranky (city folk, anyway)? Because they know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel—and it’s New Jersey.

Yes, I agree.

I’m also hungry.

How do you know that the light at the end of that tunnel isn’t that of an oncoming train?

I’m not sure the first one is written correctly. Time does change things. You either gain acceptance of a changed circumstance or knowledge with time. For circumstances to actually change, you have to put forth effort.

Failure is not the first step of success; preparation is the first step of success. Correcting your mistakes is the next step.

There is generally light at the end of the tunnel, and it can be either daylight or an oncoming train. You have to take your chances, and keep moving. There’s a related Chinese proverb I saw on a greeting card, “You only go half way into a deep, dark forest until you’re heading out of it.”

Not necessarily. Leave something outside the fridge and find out.

2.They say failure is the first step of success.
It’s the first step sometimes. Sometimes you are successful after the first attempt. Sometimes you are never successful.

3.They say every tunnel has a bright light at its end.
Unless the sun has already set.

What “they” are really saying is the life is tough and we have to be tougher in order to survive which is true in my experience.

I totally agree with you. These sayings seem to depend really on your outlook on life. Do you want to change? Do you want to take that failure and make it a success? Do you want to see something bright at the end of all the darkness?

I think they are all true, but subject to ones own experiences.

It’s darkest before the dawn could be a spin on the light at the end of the tunnel.

One things for sure, things are ever changing and nothing good or bad lasts forever.

I do think lifes challenges are easier to navigate with the ‘half full’ mentality and the awareness that everything is of a transient nature, live in the now and appriciate the moments.

They say every tunnel has a bright light at its end. not all tunnels do, not all of em.

1.They say time changes the things, you actually have to change them yourself.

Is actually an Andy Warhol (mis)quote, and thus not an actual “saying” or proverb or even expression.

2.They say failure is the first step of success. A comon saying – usually a Chinese proverb with a closed door or such is used. Quite true, I might add.

3.They say every tunnel has a bright light at its end. Every cloud a silver lining etcetera etcetera. Optimistic.

#2 is perfect. To succeed, it is enormously helpful to be unafraid of failure. You should be hoping to fail. Ira Glass, host of This American Life says this:

“You’re going to know that failure is a big part of success. […] You’re going to run into a lot of stuff and it’s going to go nowhere—and you should be happy about that. If you’re doing that, you’re doing it right. If you’re not failing all the time, you’re not creating a situation where you can get super-lucky.”

For every saying you can find, there is an equal and opposite saying and here’s the rub – the are both true for a certain set of circumstances.

@zenele “1.They say time changes the things, you actually have to change them yourself.

But in years to come it will be seen as a great (or not!) saying from the ancient past. Even Confucius probably had to contend with naysayers in his day, don’t you think?

zenele's avatar

I merely researched it and wrote this as fact @Andreas. Do I agree with the sentiment and do I think it will enter the lexicon and make its mark in the realm of sayings and proverbs? Perhaps. It isn’t very new, as you pointed out, and isn’t very well written. But then, he was more of a painter.
