Whats the best free image host ?

Asked by mirza (5057points) March 23rd, 2008

I am releasing a Tumblr theme and I am looking for the best free image host out there. I need to host about 5 graphics that are less than 2k combined. The most important factor is speed.

Agreed, @imageshack is awesome
Picboost is also pretty simple and free :)

Do you actually want to host the images for people that use your theme? Why not zip them up and let them deal with the hosting?

I use imageshack, it is seriously coder friendly and best of all, free.

But letting other people handle their own hosting is wise. What if your theme got super popular and your image host decided your account was using too much bandwidth, and all those people’s websites went imageless all of a sudden?! :O

The horror!

OK i tried some speed tests with Imageshack, PhotoBucket and Bravehost. While imageshack requires no sign-ups, the image load time was slow compared to photobucket. Photobucket is pretty awesome – free and I love the fact that it lets you see the bandwidth usage. So I ended up sticking with Photobucket.

@johnpowell: i thought it would be too complicated for the average user, to extract the zip file, upload images to a host and then use the theme. And Tumblr is all about simplicity so I try keeping it simple for the users.

ImageShack.us is okay for quick, temporary uploads but I certainly wouldn’t rely upon it especially if the image will use a decent amount of bandwidth.

I think some places like NeoGaf have actually banned the use of ImageShack.us to host images in threads..
