You peel and slice apples as you would for a pie. Then layer in a buttered pie plate or square Pyrex baking dish. The crisp is the topping; made with butter, brown sugar, chopped nuts, flour, a little cinnamon and salt.

Here is one recipe

There are dozens; just Google “apple crisp” or “apple crumble.”

Edit; Think of it as in inside-out baked apple. The recipes are very forgiving.

The crisp is usually some combination of oats, flour, brown sugar, and butter. I like to add pecans that have been coarsely ground in the food processor. Fruit crisps are easy and delicious. Enjoy.

in addition to what gail said, I like to throw some graham crackers in there.

I agree with @syz‘s description, but one more thing: If you don’t add some lemon to your apple crisp, it comes out too sweet.

@uberbatman Graham crackers, yes. Pound into crumbs, toast lightly, sprinkle on top for the last 10 minutes of baking.
