Tips for getting rid of Facebook?

I am planning on getting rid of my facebook account in eleven days because it is getting too addictive and causing problems. I have a friend who can delete it for me so that no one besides the facebook company can access it. Tomorrow I am emailing the people that I want to stay in touch with (all close friends that I know) to warn them so that we can stay in touch via phone or some other form of communication.
I am nervous as this is one of my primary ways to stay in touch with people. however this needs to be done, because facebook consumes too much of my time. If anyone has any pointers or guidelines as to deleting my facebook account I would appreciate hearing them.
