What the Lurve?

Asked by gypsywench (1641points) August 19th, 2010

I noticed that I don’t get lurve for most of my Great answers. Sometimes I only get lurve for every other great answer. Why?

First of all, other Jellies who credit you with GA’s can max out on you.
That, i believe is an amount of 100.
So if a certain user gave you twenty GA’s he/she can still give them to you, but they won’t add up your lurve.
Also, if an answer you wrote got a certain amount of GA’s then there is also a cap on how much lurve you get for that.
For example, you get 15 GA’s, you will ‘only’ 25 lurve.
The numbers i gave here might be incorrect, but i am sure there are other users who know it exactly.

Gee, I wish this were explained once and for all somewhere in the guidelines.

@Jeruba
When i wrote “but i am sure there are other users who know it exactly.” it was you who i had in mind :-)

@rebbel, I picked up my information from local lore, and I can’t speak for its exactness. But I believe you are correct: there’s an approximate maximum of 100 points of lurve from any one user to another, and that’s a total of GA’s and GQ’s. Since GA = 5 and GQ = 3, it can only be stated as “approximately” 100 points; I’m guessing that it stops when one award puts you at or over 100, so theoretically it could be as much as 104. But that’s a guess.

Moreover, GA points on any one post and GQ points on any one Q top out at 5. So even if someone who can still give you lurve awards you a GA after your post has reached 5, it doesn’t count. Same with GQ’s.

So—if your first 5 GA’s come from people who’ve already reached their max for you, you won’t see your score increase at all, though your GA count will go up and you’ll see a message of points awarded. Same with GQ’s.

I have seen days when I received 70 or more GA’s and saw an increase of only 15 points. The other day I was receiving GA’s all day and didn’t increase at all, as I recall. This is why it’s pointless (ha ha) to worry a lot about lurve.

It’s a brilliant way to keep people from gaming the system and forming little mutual lurve societies with their pals. I’m all for it.

But we have explained this all so many times, and our information comes mostly from guesswork and inference. Since it’s no secret, why can’t the link that explains lurve also spell this out?

@Jeruba
I also remember that we did an evening of experimenting on this subject, giving each other GA’s, refresh our browsers and stuff, until we little by little found how it worked basically.
Eh, good times…
You are right, i think, it could easily be an item to put in the guidelines.
People might think otherwise that all you do here is explaining how the lurve system works.
I am going to GA you again, it won’t do you any good, but hey….

The limits were put into place to prevent people from gaming the system. It might be counterproductive to actually spell out how to cheat the system.

1 out of five of my GA’s are getting lurve. I’m sorry, there’s more to this. Seriously. I get the system.

Then you’re having a new experience. The people to ask are the fluthergods (Ben, Andrew, and Tim). They’re the ones who really know.

@Jeruba Thank you!
@rebbel Thank you too!
Even since I logged back on. I should have more lurve. It’s weird.

Jeruba's avatar

So why don’t you let us know when you find out? Lately I see so little change day by day, despite dozens of GA’s, that I can’t even tell if something’s off.

Lurve is vital. 100 per is simply not enough. I refuse to stay on this website under these conditions.

@johnpowell nailed it cold.

@Jeruba wrote “Since it’s no secret, why can’t the link that explains lurve also spell this out?”

But it is a secret. And I suspect the site owners want to protect their intellectual capital as well. The staff have no doubt spent significant time thinking, planning, and improving the site’s Lurve() code. Giving that away to potential competitors is not in their best interests, or ours.

Besides – jellies love mystery.

I suspect one or both of these things, for example, led to the perfectly well-formed [Perfecto Fish] question/solution being removed by the moderators.

@zen_ how about opening a pay pal account so we can send you money say $.01 for GA

I just logged on. Since last night I got 7 GA’s and my lurve only went up 10 points? 1 for two days in a row.

I AM OVER IT. Bye

I’m hoping some experienced users are still following this. I don’t want to start a redundant question. I had a lurve score vs. message scroll discrepancy from the beginning of my fluther life. It’s not all about the numbers ( I feel the lurve) but the gap is getting wider and it can’t be explained by people maxing out on me… I’m not that popular and the gap is too big to be explained that way.

is there an issue with my settings? Deleting cookies?

I’ve seen times where I know it’s a brand new user giving me lurve but the score doesn’t move. Not that I’m so narcissistic that I want it all out there, but I have a thing about columns needing to balance and this just doesn’t.

The gap is now at about /- 1000
I’ve only been in the collective for 7 weeks

@Blueroses, have you read the responses above? And have you also noticed that you don’t see a score change register until you refresh the page?

If you really believe there’s something wrong, use the Contact button.

If it makes you feel any better, I don’t think I’d broken 1000 when I’d been around as short a time as you. You’re doing fine, and better than fine.

Blueroses's avatar

Thanks @Jeruba I appreciate that. I did talk to a couple of moderators and read all the answers I could find, but it does seem to be a little glitch. It’s not keeping me awake nights :-)
Just wondering if anybody had found an issue with cookies or adblocker extensions that might interfere.
