Can any Harry Potter fans please help me with decorating ideas?

Asked by Likeradar (19583points) August 26th, 2010

I’m in charge of getting decorations for a little guy’s 7th birthday party. It’s Harry Potter themed. Without going too nuts and too over-the-top expensive, the idea is to decorate the house like Hogwarts.

I’ve never read HP or seen one of the movies, and frankly I have no desire to.

Can anyone please give me some tips on what the heck I’m supposed to do or buy for this?

Thanks!

Create some makeshift tapestries. Hang area rugs on the wall. ~

Keep the lighting to a minimum. Using only candlelight would probably be your best bet.

Exactly what @jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities said. Also, get the obvious things, like paper plates with Harry Potter on it and a HP themed cake. Or better yet, if someone is making a home made cake, they can decorate the cake like Hagrid did for Harry’s birthday in the first book. :D

This webpage has great ideas for Harry Potter themed parties.

Red pennants. Red cloaks and magic wands as party favors.
The drink that is spoken of often in the book is butterbeer. Try to find a frothy golden beverage, like sprite over vanilla icecream.

Ok. I had a harry potter party for my… 9th birthday party I think, so 9 years ago now! Which means it may be a little uncool but what I did was just get large pieces of cheap cotton material, one in red, yellow, green and blue. I then printed out the house crest for each Hogwarts house- I think we got them off the official website but maybe you could get the little guy to draw each house crest! Anyway so Gryffindor goes on red, Slytherin goes on green, Hufflepuff goes on yellow and Ravenclaw goes on blue. We just drew the curtains and hung them along the wall of the main room we were entertaining in, over the windows kind of.

We happened to have our family computer in the corner of that same room- just inside the door. So when kids came in they would sit at the computer and complete the sorting test to sort which house they were in- found on the official Harry Potter website (I’m not sure if it’s still there). Then they would get a party hat in the colour of their house. We had one central table and streamers in the house colours and stars hanging from the roof. We had serviettes and plates in house colours too I think.

My mum and sister did an awesome job with the cake- Just basically squares of cake covered in chocolate icing in in different sizes built up to look like a castle, then ice cream cones dipped in chocolate and turned upsidedown to become the turrets of the castle. I also had little Harry Potter lego figurines which they stuck onto the cake.

For games I had a small stuffed golden snitch which we hid in the garden and threw a red ball around as the quaffle for a game of Quidditch. I think we also had a couple of the usual party games.

Would it be appropriate to bust out Halloween decorations like spider webs and bats and stuff?

Thanks for all the great ideas! I’m thinking I;m going to have to put on my crafty pants for this one.

@amazingme It’s actually proving to be really hard to find HP plates. The Party Store and Target don’t carry them, and I was only able to find one pack of 8 on Amazon. Your link just linked back to this page. Could you try again? It sounds like it could be helpful.
@filmfann We’re doing butter beer (root beer floats) for sure!
@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities a house full of butterbeered-up 7 year old boys and candlelight is a disaster waiting to happen… would those twinkly light strings be appropriate?

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@Likeradar Ahhh, rambunctious 7 year old boys. Fun times. Yes, in that case, light strings would be fine. There are candle-shaped light strings available, which would be great if you could hang them in a manner to almost seem as if they were floating, like this. Hang them so they run across the room, and not along the walls. Perhaps you could somehow cover up the cord itself, so only the white candles stuck out. Not sure how that’d work or look, but I think you’d get points for trying.

Dang, I got those plates for a party like 5 years ago, that’s sad.
Heres the link
If you go under parties there should be a lot of ideas.
