All the good folk out there with sleeping problems. Do you sometimes suddenly wake up with the fear/feeling that for some reason there is a huge insect somewhere in the room?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) August 27th, 2010

Very often I suddenly wake up either screaming or actually getting up and going to another room with the feeling that some massive insect is above me, at the bottom of my bed or next to me! Then I realize it is some kind of night terror. Am I the weird one yet again?

No, but I often have trouble falling asleep because I think something is crawling on my legs.

Oh gosh no. Thank goodness, too, I don’t think I would ever sleep again. So sorry for you! :(

I once thought I saw @jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities‘s avatar turning into a giant fly…

Seriously, do you eat late? If so, suggest you not eat anything at least 2–3 hours prior to sleep, and that you remove anything from your bedroom that might be making a sound that could be impacting your sleep and thus your dreams. I know a lot about nightmares, so I do sympathize with you.

I think you might be having hypnagogic hallucinations. I don’t really know much about them but you might find this article from wikipedia interesting too. I think they are fairly common to one degree or another.

Thankfully, no. I do all my obsessing (spider-related or not) before sleep, which is generally what prevents me from falling asleep.

@lillycoyote – That was interesting, thanks for posting it. I had no idea there was a name for that phenomenon of feeling like you’re falling right before sleep and jerking awake.

@MissAnthrope It’s interesting stuff, I agree. I also thought @ZEPHYRA might find it reassuring to know that just because sometimes wakes up screaming and has the sensation that giant insects are hovering around her doesn’t necessarily mean she’s stark raving mad. :)

I sometimes think there is a “Face-Hugger” from “Aliens” going for me

You have nailed my dreams on the head. I am so terrified with bugs, especially spiders. In my dreams they are so real!! Like right there with me. I am screaming and jumping out of bed. I don’t sleep well at night because of those terrors. I have to take a pill or have a couple of drinks. I still wake up atleast I get more if I medicate. I actually hurt myself on occasion tripping over a fan to get away from a spider that is not there . I sleep with a can of raid by my bed. I make sure I sleep with my mouth shut when going to sleep because I heard that you eat them in your sleep. I have been this way since I was little.. I have no clue how and when this started or Why. My husband teases me at times. He thinks I am silly. I laugh it off as I am just a freak. Glad to know I am not the only one.

Not a huge insect but one time I did hallucinate an alien of sorts was hanging upside down from my living room ceiling and would start to unfold it’s body when it thought I was drifting off to sleep. I kept waking back up screaming out and had no explanation for myself, no drinking, no meds, no insomnia, etc.

Thank you all for your answers, they were enlightening. So I am not stark raving mad as lily so correctly put it!
