Is it my imagination that a lot of Jellies have changed their avatars and/or user names in the last couple of days or weeks?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37335points) September 9th, 2010

There seem to be a lot of “new” Jellies with 3000 or 4000 points that I don’t know. Where did they all come from? What have I missed? Am I getting senile in my middle age?

Do Jellies make a habit of changing their user names or avatars often? Have you?

I think many have recently. I, myself, changed it a few days ago. And I tend to from time to time, but I’m trying to keep this one for a while.

Don’t know, it doesn’t matter to me. As far as my avatars, everyone knows I change those daily sometimes.

I just changed my avatar.

I’ve noticed avatar-changing, but am oblivious to name changes.

Using an old account.

I have noticed it too. I know of 2 jellies that are using a different name.

I wasn’t even aware that it was possible to change your name.

[mod says] The official policy on name changes: If you have less than 5K lurve, we’ll change it for you, to whatever name you choose (so long as it’s acceptable and available). Over 5K, we’ll change it for you but it has to be connected to your original name in some way, so that the community can still recognize you. (Daloon to Wundayatta was a fluke, an accident on my part). So, changing from StevieOOOO to OSteve would be ok, but StevieOOOO to Glitterpants would not. ;)

To request a name change, send me a PM or use the ‘Contact’ button to send me an email.

Now, to answer the actual question… I’ve changed very few names recently. Maybe three. I do know that a few long-time jellies are using alternate accounts at the moment. I’m not terribly clear on their reasons, but that’s ok.

@hawaii_jake You are most welcome. :)

downtide's avatar

@augustlan Thanks for the info. I guess I won’t be changing mine then because the only thing I would consider changing it to is related to my real name but is in no way related to “downtide”.

mrentropy's avatar

@augustlan So… could I change my name from ‘mrentropy’ to ‘mrglitterpy’ and then to ‘glitterpants’?

Fred931's avatar

See, now that you’ve mentioned avatar-changing in asking this question, everyone is going to think about changing their avatar, and that’s what some people are going to go do. In relevant news, I lost The Game.

FireMadeFlesh's avatar

I changed mine a few weeks ago. I tend to change it semi-regularly though.

augustlan's avatar

@mrentropy Ahhh… I forgot to mention one little thing. We’ll only change it once. :p

zen_'s avatar

Gives me an idea for the next reboot: zen_glitterpants.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@ChazMaz It could be your wrestler name – Chaaaaz Glitterpants MAAAAAZZZ!!

CMaz's avatar

I like that. :-)

Meet you all in the Gays in the military question for cappucinos?

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

See you there, @zen_ . It should provide some good entertainment.

CMaz's avatar

That’s just gay.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@ChazMaz : We can only hope.

Jabe73's avatar

I change mine all the time.

Changing avatar images is one thing and changing usernames is another. Some of us stick to one avatar and some switch around routinely, and I don’t think it matters as long as the name is the name.

I’ve noticed a lot of name changes lately too and wondered about it. To me it makes no difference if AA actually changes his name to BB or if he just lets his AA account sit idle and instead creates a new one and becomes active as BB. In both cases user AA is present under an unfamiliar name. I would like to know why there is so much of that going on—especially when BB puts in his profile “I used to be AA,” so there’s not even an intent to build a new identity.

One of the things we value here is the relationships we build up, and when we lose track of people we like, there is a sense of loss. I don’t understand the desire to remain here in disguise, which amounts to severing ties.

@Jeruba Most of the people who ask for name changes (after 5k) do so for privacy reasons (not Fluther privacy, but internet privacy). The vast majority of them initially used a name that is either their actual name or an internet name that is instantly recognizable to their friends and family. We often suggest they place a notice on their profile page so that jellies can still recognize them.
