What would be a song other than a national anthem, that would fill you with patriotic pride?

Asked by ucme (50047points) September 9th, 2010

I’m thinking this has been asked before. If that is indeed the case, well…..poo sticks is all I have to say. Being British nay English! I’m going to pick this as a fine example of what I mean. So, how about you?

I can’t think of a song that conveys it, but maybe whatever it is needs to be less about national pride and more about international connection.

@lucillelucillelucille No! Get outta town!! I had you down as Polish, well I never :¬)

The theme song and title track to Team America does it for me.

@judochop I feel it’s only right at this point, if a little predictable, to proclaim….....fuck yeah!

I love acoustic versions of Sweet Home Alabama. I’m not even from the state, but whenever I hear the song I think, “yep, only in America.”

ah thanks @ucme, good practise for me for Saturday’s [Last Night of the] Proms in the Park :-)

Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” I think that it talks about my relationship with my country better than any other.

However, I do love me some “Sweet Home, Alabama.” I heard a house band in Metarie when I came back to New Orleans post-Katrina to see if I had anything left playing it as “Sweet Home, Louisiana” and I was drinking beer and getting all sortsa warm. But I think that’s more “being home” than “feeling patriotic.”

@Trillian took my first choice. They played that when I was in basic training… talk about a powerful moment.

Trillian's avatar

@Seaofclouds Funny you should mention basic. They played it for us after hell week. ‘Nuff said.

I second @filmfann with “This Land Is Your Land.”

“I Still Call Australia Home”! Contrariwise, “We are Australian” sometimes makes me want to stick my head in a sound-proof bucket.

@ucme I’m surprised that you haven’t offered this one up.

ucme's avatar

@Pied_Pfeffer Suprised, why? Because of the football connection? I despise vindaloo. No really, I have no taste whatsoever for curry.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@ucme Yes, the football. You are a fan, correct?

ucme's avatar

It’s just that particular song induces vomit in me, rather than anything remotely approaching patriotism. I mean, subtle it aint. Oh & yeah well deduced Einstein. I am of course a football fan.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@ucme Geez…skip the sarcasm. I thought I recalled something about you being a sports fan. My British SO showed me the video one time and explained how it came about and its popularity. And I’m not sure what you mean by, “I am of course a football fan.” Not every person in England is.

ucme's avatar

Simply meant my avatar being a football, kind of gives a clue. Yeah anyway as I say, I don’t like that song. Not every English football fan does!

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Yup, understood. An assumption on my part that you would like it.
