Workers of the world: do you have any expectations of customers? If so, what?

Asked by KatawaGrey (21483points) September 13th, 2010

I work a retail job and most of my customer training was about how to treat/talk to customers. What I’d like to know is what you, the workers of the world, expect of the customers who come to your place of work.

A few expectations I have are:

1. Don’t hit on me. I hate it when customers hit on me. Because I’m working, I can’t diffuse the situation properly nor can I leave if I’m uncomfortable. Hitting on me is just rude.

2. Don’t get angry at me when I tell you about promotions. I have to ask. I get in trouble if I don’t.

3. Don’t get angry at me if I ask you if I can help you. Once again, it’s my job. Often, I’ll get a nudge from my manager to ask you if you need help.

4. Don’t tell me about your personal life. I’m sorry if your spouse left you and your dog died, but there is nothing I can do about it. You hinder my job by venting to me.

I think this short list is reasonable. So, fluther workers, do you have certain expectations of the customer?

You’re not always right. If you think you are, think it over again – you better have something more than “The customer is always right” if you don’t want me to think you’re a jackwagon.

If you need help with something and I am helping you, please put the cell phone down!

Don’t come in on Thanksgiving and tell me how horrible it is that they are making me work today. If it wasn’t for you wanting to shop today, we could all be home.

Yeah, I expect the customers to not be assholes.

It would motivate me if a customer noticed and/or expressed gratitude when I have provided service beyond reasonable expectations. It’s also be nice if they state to me sucinctly what they want.

I expect customers to not have this “i’ll sue you” mentality, for happening to be in my shop when they display their clumsiness and fall as a result.

My expectation of customers is that they will act in a reasonable manner as long as I am pleasant, polite and professional. Does that happen? Usually, but not always.

@KatawaGrey : I love your list! All I want is for the customers to treat me the same way I treat them. Yeah, I know, good luck with that.
