How to view drivers or items in use Mac OS X?

I am trying to delete a program with drivers, and reinstall to solve a bugging issue. When I uninstall, there are still some remnants. I have dragged them to the trash, but when I attempt to empty the trash it says “item in use.” It is not a program, where can I view a list of things operating in the background to be able to force quit?
