Mixing and matching RAM?

I am currently running CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3×2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800). My question is if I can mix my existing ram with ram of another type? And If so would I have to sync timings/frequencies? within what parameters would it be possible? good idea?
