Is the war in Iraq really over?

Asked by daytonamisticrip (4859points) September 19th, 2010

Obama says he’s pulling troops out of iraq, but is he telling the truth? My brother just called a few days and said he was being sent to iraq in december. Anybody else being sent to iraq or know someone being sent to iraq?

No, the war is not over. Obama is lying.

Technically, it’s not a war. War is declared by congress, and the last time that happened was WWII. Semantics, I know.

Anyway, what Obama ended were “combat operations”. I’m not 100% sure what defines a combat operation, but I think this means the focus is going to be more on training Iraqi Police and Security Forces to take over policing of their country. US forces will no doubt still engage in combat, but it’s not going to be the main focus. I think the whole changing the name of the operation from Operation Iraqi Freedom to Operation New Dawn (I think that’s what it’s called now) is a bit of… not quite a publicity stunt, but I’m not sure what else to call it.

I do believe the overall troop level is going down. It’s lower than it’s been in a while, but troops are still going to be deployed as the tours of those already there end.

Not to mention that I think we’re increasing troops in Afghanistan.

No. This happened today.

No, it’s not over, but Obama is not lying. They brought home a lot of troops at the end of August and they are working towards getting the others home eventually as well (I’ve heard a few timelines for when the rest will leave Iraq). They have removed the “combat” troops, but there are about 50,000 troops still in Iraq (my husband is one of them). The focus now is to support and assist the Iraqi Security Force. Instead of it being called Operation Iraqi Freedom, it is now called Operation New Dawn (as @heresjohnny mentioned). The units going over at the end of the year will be replacing the troops that are still there so that they can come home.

Of course Obama is lying. He is a US President and his mouth is open with words exiting therefrom.

@Ben_Dover Can you quote ten lies Obama has told and provide evidence to back your claim? Please and thank you.

@heresjohnny and @Seaofclouds are on point: the (undeclared) war has been declared over, but we’re not finished in Iraq yet.

No it’s not over.

Special ops and security forces are going to remain, probably indefinitely. If we ever really pull out completely, I predict we will be back within 20 years, tops. We have a wolf by the ears with this whole Iraq thing. We can’t let go, but we can’t hold on.

As long as there is oil in the Middle East, the US will also be in the Middle East.

@Ben_Dover, President Obama is not lying. He’s not saying the war is over. He simply kept his promise (more than Bush ever did) and pulled combat troops out. “Advisors” are still there, there will be more killing on both sides, and it will be many years, if ever, before we’re fully out (hell, we’ve been in Germany since World War II), but Obama’s actions are an important step.

Ben_Dover's avatar

@Austinlad WWII ended with a declaration of Peace and the surrender of the Nazis and the Japanese.
Has anyone surrendered in Iraq?

There are many ways to lie besides outright lying. Omissions are often lies.

Obama is no better than Bush or Bush’s daddy, the other Bush.

But then what do you expect from someone embroiled in Chicago politics as Obama is? Real Honesty. Hahah. What a laugh.

No, the fighting in Iraq is not over. A large number of troops have been brought home, but a large number remain & more are being sent. Obama would not be in the position of having to try to find a way out of Iraq if Bush had never invaded in the first place (Bush was & is, the liar, & should be facing trial for war crimes).

Russell_D_SpacePoet's avatar

No it’s not over. Just calling the remaining troops logistical and training troops doesn’t mean the war is over. Our guys are still being shot at.

@Ben_Dover Actually he’s following exactly what he said he’d do. First a drawdown (we had around 150k in Iraq when he entered office two years ago), and by the end of next year or so we should have none.

Now I fully expect that the Iraqi’s will ask us to keep a contingent there on a long term basis between now and then (akin to how we have 20k in South Korea still, and some in Japan), but as of the presidents announcement US troops were no longer leading patrols or guarding Iraqi buildings or what have you. They’re there to be called on to help Iraqi’s when needed. Most of our troops there are auxiliary people, air force, special ops, trainers, and things of that nature.

@Ben_Dover

ACORN was a completely legit organization that self reported the incidents that were then branded as it being corrupt, and was the target of far right wing activists who lied and made MASSIVELY edited videos to make ACORN look like some kind of human trafficking evil corporation.

Obama wanted to put healthcare debates on the air, and in fact ONE of them was on the air (you may remember the square table debate thing?) The REPUBLICANS were the ones that refused to do it with cameras present.

Furthermore, here ya go…. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/

@tedd Acorn completely legit? Please…

tedd's avatar

@Russell_D_SpacePoet That you even think it wasn’t is proof of how effective the smear campaign against it was.

Russell_D_SpacePoet's avatar

@tedd They were questionable before the “sting”. That is why the “sting” took place. Because there were already questions about Acorn. You thinking they are totally innocent is very telling. I suspect the truth about Acorn lies between my views and your own. Three sides to every story.

tedd's avatar

@Russell_D_SpacePoet are you referring to the “sting” by that one kid and his buddies, where he pretended to be a pimp and got loans? That guy turned out to be a total fraud. He made it look like he went there in pimp clothes and it turns out he was in nice suits, he cut out parts and didn’t show cuts all together where ACORN officials kicked him out and told him what he wanted to do was illegal and they were calling the police.

He talked at length with one guy in California about smuggling in “sex slaves” and the guy got all this info about where they’d be coming from and where he wanted them and as many details as he could. The video actually looks pretty bad, looks like he’s actively going to help the guy smuggled sex slaves into the US. The part they don’t show you is how immediately after he left the ACORN guy called the police and gave them all of the details he had meticulously asked for. That poor guy lost his job for his trouble.

The voter fraud was where people were signing up Mickey Mouse and Jimmy Johns to vote in the 2008 election. Well those were self reported by ACORN. What it was is they had paid people to sign up people to vote, and paid them commission (per x people they signed up). So to boost their numbers some people made up voters and filled out the slips. Once they’re in the system though, ACORN BY LAW had to submit them, even knowing they were fraudulent. They would later be tagged and pulled out during processing, but they weren’t allowed to take them out. For self reporting people who abused their system and taking all the right steps to insure it didn’t actually effect the vote, the right accused them of winning the election for Obama (even though all of the cases we heard about were in Chicago Illinois, a City and state Obama won handily).
