How do you use tumblr themes?

Asked by kristin307 (1points) March 29th, 2008

So I found a theme online that I like and it just says to copy and paste into the theme editor on tumblr, but when I do that it shows up as a bunch of text instead of the actual theme. I have no idea what I’m doing. Help?

Once you see the theme editor, remove all the previous code from it and then paste the new code you copied from the text file. After you paste the code, it will be a bunch of text. Just click “Save Changes”. And now view your tumble-log. It should have the new theme.

Can I ask what theme you found ?

…and where is a good place to go for themes for Tumblr?

@boettiger: Tumblr Themes, Free Themes, Parandroid, Tumblepedia (is not as good the rest)

Also you can check out Sweet Themes which features the best designed tumblr sites

im trying to use this theme http://seethrough.tumblr.com/

I clicked on Download seethrough_theme.txt, copied everything on that page, and pasted it into the custom html box on tumblr. Now my tumblr is plain black and white http://ksto.tumblr.com/

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong?

Ok i think you pasted it wrong.

Lets do it all over.
1. Go To CUSTOMIZE
2. Select the THEME tab
3. Click on CUSTOM HTML
4. Select everything on the CUSTOM HTML box and delete it
5. Open this text file and copy everything
6. Paste the contents onto the Custom HTML box and then click Save Changes.

I did that, still nothing. Here’s exactly what I’m doing- open that text file, it comes up in a new internet explorer window showing a bunch of code, click edit-select all, ctrl+C, and then paste that into the custom html box on tumblr. What am I missing here?

I just tried.. I never had an account there before.. It worked for me.

I’m not really sure what is going on. Did you delete the HTML that was already in the Custom HTML box before pasting in the new stuff?

View the source on mine and yours. Very different.

I tried to do the same thing with a different theme and the same thing happened—it just became text. Do you think it has something to do with the fact that we already have stuff IN the blog itself? Or does that not make the difference?

mirza's avatar

@emilynation: it doesn’t make a difference if you have stuff in the blog itself. All you have to do is delete the previous contents and post the new code. Then click “Save Changes”. Its working fine for most people. I just created a group and changed its theme, and added the flickr stuff (that you wanted on your other question) – here

Ok I figured out what the problem was. I was trying to do this at work where I have Internet Explorer. However, when I came home and tried to get the theme code on Firefox, it worked just fine. Thanks to everyone that tried to help!

Does anyone think they can tell me how to make the transparent boxes a little bit more opaque? Not all the way, I just want my words to stand out a little more. Thanks. ksto.tumblr.com

I tried to add a drop shadow to my text thinking maybe that would make it easier to read, but I couldn’t figure that out either.
