Why is the product key for windows xp invalid?

I’m using a bootable usb drive to install windows xp on my eeepc asus,
which previously had linux xandros.
It seems it all goes perfectly until I get to the product key : Not valid..
I’ve tried and tried.. it won’t give in.
are there any suggestions please?
