I have had the best luck with Avis.

As to do you need insurance – that depends. Do you have insurance for your normal car? If so you are probably covered. Also if you have a visa through your bank check with them because some banks insure you if you rent the car with that card. That usually applies to credit cards only not debits.

@mrlaconic – thanks, how much did you pay for it?

I’ve had good prices and good experiences with Dollar.

Try Orbitz, Yahoo Travel and Expedia to compare prices. AAA Autoclub, too, if you are a member.

We have a frequent customer account with Enterprise and have always been pleased with their prices and service. They are nearly always out of the compacts we ordered in advance and have to upgrade to a larger car at the lower price.

Budget, Alamo, and Dollar are usually the cheapest.

Make sure you get unlimited mileage. If you are staying with someone who can pick you up at the airport and drive you to a rental pick up away from the airport, many times it is much cheaper, especially during the holidays, and frequently you can drop off at the nearby airport for no extra charge.

Call your insurance and ask what your coverage is for rental cars, so you can decide whether to buy coverage through the rental company.

@curlyz I have paid between 25.00 and 45.00 a day depending on the style of car I was driving at the time.

I’ve always had really good luck with Enterprise.

Forgot to mention. Don’t buy their gasoline!

Most companies will ask if you want to bring it back with a full tank or let them fill it up (for something like $8.00/gallon).

I agree with the Texas flash, @Austinlad, for the money, Enterprise hands down. I worked for a major insurance company and this is who we used and I’ve them personally. They are very people friendly and have a great price.

Depends on your insurance coverage, if they don’t cover rental cars, i would take out their insurance on the car.
