Is there a town with artistic and intellectual people in the Northeastern United States that isn't touristy, set in a wooded area?

Im looking for a town with artistic and intellectual people in the Northeastern United States that isn’t touristy, slightly off the beaten path. Rather like the setting and people for Northern Exposure.

Lenox, MA.
Northhampton, MA.
Williamstown, MA
Hanover, NH
Bennington, VT
Lyme, CT
Chatham, NY (near Milo’s home.)
Litchfield, CT.
MIlford, CT.
Preston, CT.
Middlebury, VT.

Addendum: beautiful small towns in NE with culture, intellectual stimulation and interesting people tend to attract some tourists (not as many as visit the Statue of Liberty, however). Additionally, real estate is not cheap although in this market there are some bargains.
