Have you ever been through a major flood and how would you feel about reliving that event?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) September 30th, 2010

We’re getting a lot of rain in the Northeast part of the US today. In 2006 we had a massive flood in the area and they are forecasting similar amounts of rain again. Have you ever been through a large flood and what did you experience? And what would be running through your mind if it’s going to happen again?

Floods are pretty regular events in my neck of the woods and sand bagging with the scouts is something we do almost every year. Just do what ya gotta do and put things up on blocks and hope the power doesn’t go off during the ordeal on top of everything else that happens.

@Cruiser We don’t usually get this much rain in one storm. The 2006 flood was from 7 inches of rain, and that was approaching a 1000 year flood. A lot of flood zone maps were proven wrong in that one. This one they’re forecasting up to 5 to 6 inches. Joy.

@Adirondackwannabe ; I just looked at the radar…hope your house is on a hill!

@JilltheTooth My house is way up in the hills. Most everyone else is along the river valleys.

@Adirondackwannabe 6” rains here in the mid west are a dime a dozen and usually don’t present a problem unless you get 2 within a few weeks of each other and that does happen here every year. I live near a river and it doesn’t have to rain here as if it rains anywhere up river it all has to come by sooner or later and everybody gets nailed. Good luck!

They are cutting back on the forecast for how much accumulation we’re going to get. Some rivers are starting to flood in a few areas, but so far not to bad. We’ll have to see what tonight brings.
