What are your favorite speeches?

Asked by roundsquare (5522points) October 3rd, 2010

What speeches do you find inspirational, moving, provocative, etc…?

Personally, I like Kennedy’s speech in Germany. Even with the “Ich bin ein Berliner” faux paux.

Hands down, Churchill’s famous speech of 1940.

By far, Harvey Milk’s Hope Speech.

Another one I love is Chief Joseph’s “I Will Fight No More Forever”.

Frederick Douglas’s speech on the Hypocrisy of American Slavery

“Go search where you will, roam through all the monarchies and despotisms of the Old World, travel through South America, search out every abuse and when you have found the last, lay your facts by the side of the everyday practices of this nation, and you will say with me that, for revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival.”

Frederick Douglass – July 4, 1852

I pretty much agree with @Seek_Kolinahr. Maybe not that particular speech—or that section of it, anyway (I do like the never never never never never surrender, which I think was part of that speech, but not included in that clip), but his announcement of the commencement of the Battle of Britain and ‘their finest hour’.

I have a dream.

Jetzt wächst zusammen, was zusammengehört.

We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus—and non-believers.

I don’t know how I forgot the Gettysburg Address, or Lincoln’s Second Inauguration.

“The better angels of our nature” is a poetic image that even an atheist can enjoy.
