How do you deal with low blood sugar?

Asked by awomanscorned (11261points) October 4th, 2010

I’m not diabetic but sometimes, mostly in the middle of the night, I get low blood sugar. It makes me get dizzy, cold sweats, nauseous, chills, and confused. It was so bad the other night that I had to go to the emergency room. They tested me for diabetes but I was fine. What are some ways you can deal with this?

You could try having a snack before going to bed at night to see if that helps. I would make sure it’s a complex carb to be sure that it lasts throughout the night. You should make an appointment to talk to your doctor about it in addition to what the ER told you.

A complex carb at bedtime. Also keep some crackers or bread sticks by your bed so you have something to eat handy.

Perhaps you are eating too many carbs late at night. It could be causing a surge of insulin in your system that is taking you too low in the middle of the night. I’d recommend writing down everything you’ve ate the past few days (if you can remember) and write down how you felt each night and discuss that with your doctor.

When my blood sugar goes low, apple juice works well -if you don’t have that, then anything with sugar works-but you have to be aware of the symptoms and tke care of it immediately.

I drink lots of water and that seems to help.

I’m confused. You say they tested you for diabetes and you were fine. So are you saying your sugar level was fine in the hospital? Then why do you think you are hypoglycemic? Or, was your sugar level actually low?

If your sugar level was good then we have to think of other medical causes, not just healthy eating habits for steady sugar levels. Any chance your blood pressure is very high or low? Actually sounds more like low blood pressure, or that you are having a panick attack?

I was just thinking that if you had tried eating and drinking juice before going to the hospital your sugar might have been up again. So, they may not have been able to diagnose hypoglycemia. Have you actually had that diagnosed by a doctor?

first drinking water does not help HYPOglycemia, you do not have to be diabetic to be hypoglycemic, but NORMALLY hypoclycemia is secondary to something else, like diabetics if they have too much insulin it lowers the sugar, but for someone who does not take insulin, diet, like high protein and no or extremly low carb diets can tend to lower your blood sugar. My sister was having this problem awhile back and they adjusted her diet and had her eat a small snack every two hours. Make a food diary if possible to start with, and buy some sugar/glucose tablets to put at the bedside for emergencies. hope this helps a little.

You need to see your doctor and determine if you have reactive hypoglycemia, which can be managed by diet, or fasting hypoglycemia, which may require medication.

I agree with @skfinkel Orange juice will bring back up your blood sugar. My fiance drinks that when his blood sugar is low.

I just wanted to come back and add PLEASE keep your Dr. appointment, hypoglycemia as I said before is usually secondary to something else, so above everything, please go to the doctor!!!

@noelleptc Thanks for the update! I’m glad your doctor was able to help you out. I hope the new eating habits help.
