Mission to Mars! Would You? Could You?

Asked by RealEyesRealizeRealLies (30951points) October 5th, 2010

1000 square feet of space craft. 6 months to get there, 6 months return, 1.5 years of setting up base camp on the surface… 2.5 years away from family, friends, drive up fast food windows…

Could you?

You’re making this trip with three other strangers, highly trained, intelligent, specialized people. You’ll probably have to screw one of them in zero gravity just to fulfill NASA’s list of experiments.

Would you?

Upon your return, you get 10 million dollars, a book deal, and an honorary seat on the board of directors for the fortune 500 company of your choice. All you have to do is spend 2.5 years in a cold hollow metal tube, set up a flag, and press a few buttons… Anne Frank did it. Prisoners spend decades in small spaces too… Could you, as a hero of Earth, could you?

If so, how would it change you?

Yes. It is a once in a life time experience. I am sure my husband won’t mind. Or would he, hmmmm?

I would make the trip today, even if I knew for a fact that I would not be coming back.

The isolation would be no problem for me, i like being alone. i have practically spent the last 2–3 years in this room im in now for work. im fairly healthy and work well under stress. I would jump at the chance.

That sounds better than how I live now.

In my 20’s I would have been the first to sign up.

As it stands now, I’m pretty comfortable right here on good old Earth although the thought of screwing someone in zero G in the name of science does have its allure.

I’d sure as hell be in that line. I would instantly accept that offer, you don’t even need to give me the money, the book offer, or to be part of some big company. I’d do it because it’s fucking exploration of space and attempted colonization of another planet.
I have no idea how I could be useful to such a team though. I’m not exactly an elite in any field.

One requirement would be a sophisticated 3-D virtual reality compartment with full-body haptic feedback suits, so I can hug my kids from time to time and have sex with my wife during the trip (functioning almost like a star trek holodeck). Trouble is how to have realtime sex when radio transmissions requires several minutes to reach our spaceship?

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies – That should do it ;-)
