What's the best way to care for wool at home?

Asked by GD_Kimble (2285points) March 31st, 2008

I have a very expensive topcoat that I wear often (I live in NYC and it’s still cool out). Recently I got caught in the rain and my coat got that “wet wool” smell that everyone hates. It’s been awhile but the aroma won’t fade. Is there a way to freshen up wool outside of products like Febreeze and spending a fortune at the dry cleaner?

If the sun ever comes out, (which seems unlikely since it is snowing now -2 hr drive N of NYC) you can try hanging the coat outside where the sun hits it. It is likely that your coat has the dreaded mildew.
