When is the implied more powerful than the directly stated?

I should be writing a paper, but I’m thinking instead…

What I mean is, what are some examples of situations in which it is more powerful not to say something than to come out and say it? Is there such a situation?

Instead of situations think in terms of readers/viewers/audience…
If they are educated/refined/sophisticated subtle is far more affective.
