5 Simple Environmental Fixes:?

Asked by jonami (137points) March 24th, 2010

If you were to say there were only five SIMPLE things that everyone could easily do to make a HUGE, TREMENDOUS difference in the world’s environment, what would they be?

For instance, I am thinking:

1…DONT DRIVE: walk, bike, or use public transportation.
2…RECYCLE: BUT ALSO BUY RECYCLED, SHOP AT THRIFT STORES, ETC. DONT LITTER: and PICK UP LITTER
4…GET YOUR NEWS/INFO on the internet…....quit reading newspapers/(2ND LEADING CAUSE OF LANDFILL WASTE)
5….QUIT BUYING MEAT AND QUIT WASTING SO MUCH…..

ALSO: WHAT ORDER OF IMPORTANCE WOULD YOU SAY THESE ISSUES SHOULD BE NUMBERED? THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION. I TRY TO DO MOST ALL OF THEM BUT THE EATING MEAT PART SO FAR.

Also: Does anyone know of any good shocking facts or photos to back up WHY these are the best (or why your solution is the best)?

Simple?!

No such thing. It requires work. Coordinated, earnest global work.

I always like to recommend this book when the topic of the environment, industry and our role in the world is a topic.

And for the record, you don’t have to be a vegetarian to respect the environment.

P.S. CAPS LOCK MAKES ALL OF MY POINTS VALID.

In my environmental class I took during fall semester we were given a list of 14 things which could “save the planet” and had to write cons and pros of one item. Let’s just say there are no easy solutions.

For example I can’t drive for another reason and getting around in my city without a car is a bitch, let me tell you. Most places I need or want to go (including my college) are simply too far by foot or bike or don’t have good public transportation. It’s easy to say “Don’t drive!!!!” but living with that reality is far more complicated.

it’s a little complicated, but luckily the population here adds up to about 90–100 thousand so everything is within about 5 miles, which considering, isn’t too bad, as far as walking goes. sometimes i have to take a cab when it comes to groceries but i walk up hill, i think it’s about 3 miles each way to college. I don’t mind it, really.

@hug_of_war, gently, gently, you don’t have to do everything and you don’t have to do everything now. But it’s useful for you (and me) to be thinking about WHY you live in a city you can’t get around in without a car. How did the city get that way? Why is it good for it to be that way? and blah blah blah. Serious.
