Why do many guys ask me if I have a boyfriend or not?

I’m a single and young college student. Many guys from my classes and society approached me and asked if I have a boyfriend or not. I told them no i haven’t a boyfriend. I don’t understand why they ask me like that. I avoid all the boys for some reason. Are they interested in wanting to date with me?
