How bad is straightening your hair for its health?

I’m a guy who has very thick hair and wants to grow it out long and I’m assuming that in order to contain it in its growing phase I will like to straighten it, and I’m wondering how damaging this will be to overall health of the hair in the long term and if perhaps there are any other alternatives.
