Why are we helping South Korea?

South Korea won’t allow the US free trade in their country, would not sign a trade pact with the president, but when they get shelled who turns up to help them with military exercises? We do! Why? and shouldn’t we charge to protect South Korea?
Considering how the United States has to be the worlds police officer, should we not be getting some protection money if we cannot have free trade?
