Changing your facebook picture to a cartoon character, to fight child abuse. Can you explain how this is supposed to work?

I logged onto Facebook just a bit ago to see someone post this: ”Change your FB profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood. The goal…Not to see a human face on FB till Monday, December 6th. Join the fight against child abuse, copy & paste to your status and invite your friends to do the same!!” (and a few variations thereof). I have a bunch of friends who’ve followed the instructions.

I’m certainly not someone who thinks child abuse is good. I absolutely think that any kind of abuse should end. But, I fail to see how changing a picture is going to do anything to help that cause.
I feel like I’m in an Underpants gnome situation here. I understand phases one and three, but phase two is just a big question mark.

So dearest Fluther, in the fight against the vile beast that is abuse (of any kind), how exactly will changing my Facebook photo help?

P.S. I like it on the floor, with yellow polkadots.
