What does it take to be a great Web Developer?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) January 4th, 2011

Certainly there is a suite of technical skills covering HTML. CSS and JavaScript plus perhaps MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server and some Web capable scripting languages (PHP, Perl, ASP, etc.) for server-side scripting. A development environment is handy for speed of coding.

There is also understanding of the necessary communication protocols and domain name service. There is server software mastery. Then there is graphic art, marketing, search engine optimization, and the human side of the equation. I’ve seen technically brilliant developers push out user interfaces that are nothing but infuriating to end users, and craft stores that wouldn’t be able to sell get-out-of-jail-free tickets to guys waiting the call on death row.

What all is required to be a stand-alone star as a Web developer? If you have a nominee in mind, can you post a link to some of their work?
