Does a husband need to add his wife as a driver on car insurance?

I have recently left my husband. I asked if I could use the car, which was bought for me to use, but it’s in his name. He said no because I can’t afford the insurance. ( I haven’t worked in years) He has it insured in his name, would he have had to add me as a driver? His name only is on the insurance card, but I drove the car regularly for a year. Are married people covered anyway? This is in the usa.
