The scientist and the party girl -- anybody recognize this science fiction story?

About 20 years ago I read a short SF story about a future in which technological advances had eliminated most of the need for people to work. The population consisted of a small number of people who did what little real work was left to do—scientists, for example—and the rest, who spent their days merrily consuming and being entertained. These two types of people rarely interacted. The story describes a romance between a male scientist and a female consumer, and how difficult it was for them to understand each other.
Can anyone tell me the title and/or author of this story?
