Why has my cursor started jumping around when I type on my computer?

This has just started happening today. I’ll be typing, as I am now, and the cursor keeps jumping a few inches back and starts typing over what I’ve already written. It even sometimes erases what I wrote, which is really scary because I’m writing a novel, and I don’t want to inadvertently erase it. Is there any way to correct this?
