Why do some women (apparently those in the limelight) wear the newest versions of stiletto heels?

Shoes like these appear to instruments of torture designed to torment and injure the wearer. Is this similar to the custom of binding women’s feet? Why do some women behave like mindless sheep instead of simply saying “No, thanks.”?
