Need a new vacuum cleaner. Suggestions?

I’d like something reasonably compact, yet powerful. I would prefer it not be too expensive. And I would like something that lasts.

Major targets for this purchase: cat hair and cat litter tracked out of the litter box. Until I got this bloody cat, I was doing pretty well with a mop and broom. The litter often gets between cracks in my floorboards, which makes it nearly impossible to sweep up – and it’s better not to mop clay litter anyway.
