What sort of tropical freshwater fish live peacefully with each other?

I’m thinking about getting a tank of tropical fish. I’ve kept cold water fish for so long that I’ve decided I’m now going to try my luck with keeping tropical fish. What are some good suggestions for fish that I could start with? What sorts of tropical fish live well together? Are there some fish, that although they’re peaceful don’t live well together?
