Do dreams really symbolize what's going on in your real life?

A few times, I’ve dreamt I witnessed some close friends of mine being killed. One time it was on a roller coaster another time it was by a madman while we were on a picnic.

Nothing stressful was going on in my life at the time of the dream and my friends are fine.
