What kind of small, potted plant should I grow?

I want to keep a plant in my college dorm room next year. It’ll have to be small and tolerate a small pot (I can’t picture housing a pot bigger than maybe 6 inches in diameter) and fairly hardy (I have very little control over how much sun it will get or the temperature in my room). What plants might fit this description?
